What’s stopping you from creating your ideal practice?

December 29th, 2010

During this period when we pause to give closure to one year and to welcome in the possibilities for the new year I ask you to honor yourself and your work by taking a few minutes to contemplate and create.

So ask yourself this powerful question, I call it the miracle question for your business…

If you could wave a (realistic) magic wand and you could create your ideal practice in the next 6-months to 1 year, what would that look like?”

Now take a few minutes to truly savor that- what would your days look like, what would you be doing each day (teaching, speaking, writing your book, seeing a handful of clients), how much would you be making, what would it feel like? Allow yourself to get lost in visualizing this for your business.

Now take 30-minutes and pull out some markers, crayons, oil pastels, magazines or any art materials that strike your fancy. Find or create images and words that support your ideal practice. Truly make this so yummy and a bit of a stretch to grow into, but also tangible and within the realm of possibilities. Play and enjoy the process and allow your heart to guide you.

Now take a few minutes to take in and relish what you’ve created. It should feel expansive, a bit out of reach, exciting and give you tingles!

Here’s the next step in this process- and where you can welcome in purposeful action. Ask yourself these questions and allow yourself to freely journal without any censoring, and see what you discover.

What do you desire to create in the next 6-12 months? Describe in detail what it would look like 6 months to a year from now.

What’s been stopping your from creating this vision of your ideal practice? (Keep asking this question until you have released all the thoughts, beliefs and physical things that are keeping your from achieving this vision).

How would it feel if you released all these things and beliefs that have been stopping you and you flowed easily and gracefully towards your ideal vision?

What do you need to do (or not do) or let go of to make your vision a reality?

What’s one thing your will do right now to take purposeful action towards your vision?

I celebrate the possibilities of your vision and know that you must take the time to reflect and welcome your ideal practice- then you must take purposeful action to make it come to life. That’s where I can help support your vision and help guide you to turn it into a reality ☺ Yippee! So I invite you to join me as I share my SECRETS of how I filled my own practice & created an award winning fee-for-service 6-figure business, and how I can help your authentically do the same!  Register here for the Fill My Practice Secrets Complimentary Teleseminar now!

Are you unconsciously pushing clients away from working with you?

November 17th, 2010

I bet you are reading the title to this article and thinking, “no way”, however you may be doing, and thinking, some things that may actually be pushing your clients away from working with you. Read this short article and see if you’re unconsciously pushing away your clients and how you can put the welcome mat out on your practice!

So how do you know if you are pushing your clients away? Here are some signals to look for.

1. You don’t have systems in place.

You may be thinking ‘systems’? What’s a system, and why the heck would I need one? If you don’t have systems in place you’ll be spending so much time and energy on doing things again (and again), you may feel exhausted and overwhelmed when a new client comes along.

How do you know if this is problem for your business? Ask yourself if you would feel overwhelmed and stressed out if your business were to double? If the answer is yes, then it’s likely you’re pushing clients away.

Systems are ways to repeat a series of actions to achieve a specific result. As a creative pioneer, I hesitated creating systems because I thought I would be bored! What I realized instead is that a system acts like a bookend and allows the flexibility and freedom to play within the structure.

So here are areas you can create systems for your business. Create systems for follow-up, for client conversations, for your intake process, after networking and speaking events. Once you do so you’ll have a repeatable system that takes the guess work out of what to do or say, and you’ll be able to focus your energies elsewhere.

2. When the phone rings you get nervous.

Yes, a bit of nerves may be common, but if you’re feeling anxiety about taking on new clients this may be a sign that something else is going on. Take a minute and check-in to see what’s underneath the nerves. Do you feel like taking on another client is too much, do you feel concerned you don’t know enough to help this person, are you worried about being overwhelmed with more paperwork and filing insurance for your clients?

When you identify what your anxiety is about there is an opportunity to make changes. If you’re not sure about the underlying feeling, take 15-minutes and write words or draw images of what you’re feeling. You get clear quickly, so you can shift your energies to welcoming new clients.

3. You’re really busy with lots of things, but they are not activities that put you in conversations with potential clients.

Is your office activities and business a distraction from connecting with clients? If so, then you are likely to take on more projects and stay really busy doing and redoing things (and checking and rechecking your emails). Instead, shift the focus and put your efforts and energies on connecting with and engaging in conversations with your potential clients and referral resources.  The cool thing is once you create systems (see #1) then, you’ll have the exact process to connect and follow-up with your potential clients.

4. You terminate with clients before they are ready.

My therapist friend and I had a great conversation the other night about the length of working with clients. She spoke candidly about having clients she worked with for years, and how early on in her career she would feel compelled to move clients out of her practice. Now she realizes that clients continue to come to sessions (year after year) because they value having someone fully present listening to them. She realized it was her  ‘stuff’ that wanted to move people out of her therapy office.

So how do you respond to termination? Even if you work in a short-term or a program model, do you provide the option for maintenance sessions or follow-up check-ins?  If not, you may be missing out on an area to further support your clients and you may be unconsciously pushing your clients away.

How to create the practice your heart desires!

June 16th, 2010
I spoke to two different therapists within 24-hours who were talking about feeling burned out. That’s a terrible feeling, and I know all of us who have worked with clients for any length of time have felt that way. It’s essential to nourish ourselves and re-charge our batteries, and I hope you are creating space in your life to do so.
I’m honoring my heart’s desire to travel, connect, and chill-out this summer. First with a trip to Washington DC, where I’m being flown out by SORE to be a part of a video they are creating (how cool is that), and then off to NY for 6 weeks “playcation”. I’ll be spending lots of time on the lake, taking some time to read, do art, hike, nap, be with family and friends, while working with select practice building clients, and my platinum group.
Sounds delicious, right? You may even want to eradicate me from your email box, angrily thinking, “Well that just works for you Laura”. Here’s the most joyous part of this, you can recreate what your practice looks like, so it honors you, and what you desire.
How?
Let’s break it down, so you too can start to see the possibilities. In the process you’ll get to engage both sides of your brain, working first with your creativity and intuition, then with your logical linear thinking.
First, get very clear on what you desire, exactly what it looks like and feels like for you to be living in alignment doing your heart’s work being of service to others, AND how you are being of service to yourself.
Secondly, you need a step-by-step plan. This is where the logical and linear mind shows up to support you, with a clear and concise plan of action to take. This is what will help you move from point A to point B, and reach the goal you desire.
When I did this in my own therapy business it became crystal clear on what I needed to focus on to help me move toward the goal I desired, it also helped me get clear on what I was doing that was a waste of time, energy, and money.
Here’s my question for you, do you have your ‘how’? Do you have a step-by-step plan in place with the clear actions you need to take to create the practice your truly desire?
Your Creative Practice Building Homework:
1. Create your ideal vision of your therapy business, what you are desiring to create. This is where you can invite your intuitive, creative, knowing side to come forward and play. Pull out the art supplies and collage materials, or write with your non-dominant hand, or wave you magic wand and wish, whatever gets your creative juices flowing…then allow space for you to witness what arises without judgment and censorship.
2.Create an action plan. Start by identifying what you desire to create, your outcome, then break it down into small steps to get there. First identify your clients, then develop your system on how you work with clients, then how you will connect with them, then how you will create a system to continue to follow-up with clients who are not quite ready, then create a plan on how to leverage your time, so more people will have access to the gifts you have and you’ll be of service to many more clients. When you break it down into smaller steps you’ll have a map for your business and you’ll see results quickly!

Client Connection Tip- What do your clients really want?

March 11th, 2010

I’m going to offer you tips to build your practice leading up to the Therapist Resource Telesummit March 12-14. Here’s a tip that will help you create programs that meet your client’s needs.

What Your Clients Want

You  may have an idea of what you believe your clients want, but that may not actually be what they want. Most therapists are given the gift of seeing clearly where others need support, however if your clients are looking for support in other areas you may be missing an opportunity to serve them. So how do you find out what they really want?

You can ask and listen.

Survey your clients, interview your clients, interview potential clients, have them fill out self-reports, talk with referral resources, use community  talks as an opportunity to learn more about your client’s problems and what support they are seeking.

Simple strategies, however, you may be surprised at what you find, and you’ll also learn new ways you can create programs to support their needs!

Client Connection Tip- what's your expertise?

March 9th, 2010

I’m going to offer you tips to build your practice leading up to the Therapist Resource Telesummit March 12-14. Here’s a tip that will help you establish yourself as the ‘go to person” when a problem arises-

Specialization-

It is necessary not only to help strengthen your clinical skills, but to help your clients recognize how you can help them. If you are a generalist, you do a disservice to those clients who are seeking someone with specialized skills.  Most therapist do not specialize because they are fearful that they will not be able to fill their practice. the truth is just the opposite!

To fill your practice it is essential to clearly and concisely state who you work with and the benefits they get from working with you. When you become a specialist you establish yourself as an expert, and your clients will seek you out and happily pay you for your expertise.

Client Connection Tip- to fill your practice effortlessly

March 3rd, 2010

I’m going to offer you tips to build your practice leading up to the Therapist Resource Telesummit March 12-14. Here’s a tip that will help you make instant connection and create an opening to invite others to work with you-

Speaking

Speaking is a great way for people to get to know you, even if you are an introvert. Here are a few tips to get you started:

  1. Speak to groups that your ideal clients attend. You will want to ensure that the audience you are speaking to will benefit from your message, so identify groups that attract your ideal clients.
  2. Use your signature system as your talk outline. When you create a signature system potential clients understand what you do and the benefits they will receive from working with you.
  3. Don’t worry if you are introverted, set up speaking engagements to as an opportunity to connect with your audience and understand their biggest fears, worries, and pains. You can use the speaking opportunity as a forum discussion to learn from the group and share a few insights and tips.
  4. Have a way to stay in contact with those people after they leave, beyond a brochure and business card. Because if they are not ready to work with you now, they may be ready in the future, so ensure you have a way to maintain connection.
