Here’s how you can attract ideal private pay clients

March 23rd, 2011

Over the years of being in business I found that this is the essential ingredient to welcoming in ideal clients to your practice and to be quite honest, it’s fairly simple and extremely profound. I’ve seen this in my business, and learned this from other therapists making 6 and 7-figures, and when I am aligned with this core element my business flourishes.

It’s Love.

When love is at the core all things flow with ease and grace supporting you so you can support others. Let me show you exactly how love helps you to flourish in your business and welcome in ideal clients too.

Your business is a reflection of you, so when you are honored, loved and supported, your business reflects that as well. Here’s how you can lavish yourself with love: ask for and be willing to receive support. How does that look for you? Does that mean you let go of tasks that do not serve you, transition to private pay clients and let go of, or outsource insurance reimbursements, create systems and delegate out what is not your brilliance work? This frees up time for you to renew yourself, work on what gives you pleasure and be present with your needs. Nourishing your heart and soul creates a feeling of expansions and a softened presence reflected in all of your interactions.

Being centered and grounded in love, you can let go of things that do not honor you, lovingly releasing thoughts, ‘to-do’s’, expectations, ‘shoulds’ and anything else that does not serve you. You become more committed to honoring your precious time and release what drains your time, and you hold others in a place of accountability. Watch how, as you embrace self-love, others will respect your time and boundaries. You will notice how your clients shift, and you’ll attract new clients whom respect your time and gifts (reducing no-shows, cancellations, or late payments). You’ll find it is easier to say, “no thank you”, to what does not serve you, and “yes” to what feels self-honoring.

When you are nourished and come from a place of love when you’re asked about your business you naturally shine your enthusiasm and passion.  You share what you do, knowing that your gifts help others. You release all beliefs about not knowing enough, not having enough education, experience, etc and instead fully embrace yourself with love and compassion for the healing gifts you innately possess.

From this place of love you share the work you do and how you can help others. You release any limiting beliefs that keep you focused on your ‘stuff’ and instead you are able to be fully present and open when others ask you about what you do. Operating from a place of love, you are clear which clients you work best with; and you share this with those you meet, so they can pass on your name and information to those ideal clients you can best serve. All of your marketing materials reflect this, as your words are client-centered and deeply resonate with those ideal people you are meant to serve.

Here’s the final element of how love impacts your work. When your clients are in your presence they feel your love and compassion. I remember years ago hearing Bill O’Hanlon speak to my class on loving your clients. At the time I thought, well that’s really inappropriate. I’ve now come to a deeper awareness that loving your clients is fundamental in the work we do as healers. As we help people move on their own journey of compassion and self-love and letting go of beliefs and behaviors that no longer serve them, we must be fully present with love.  This loving presence is the balm for the pain and suffering of those we work with. They may not be ready to move into love for themselves, and they many not have ever experienced a compassionate and understanding presence. Your holding the space with love allows your clients to do the same.

How does this impact your business you may wonder? For your clients being held in a place of love and compassion is a powerful feeling and this creates deep relationships with clients who are committed to their personal work. You’ll find your clients more invested in their sessions and themselves, and as they fully embrace their own self-love they become joyous “fans” spreading the message of what you do to their friends and family.

For those of you who are feeling a pull between feeling like you need to do more, and embracing compassion and self-love (and you want some very practical creative strategies to keep you grounded) then I invite you to the Creative Alchemy Retreat.

Creative Alchemy happens when you open to the possibilities and declare that you are the authority in your life.

Lessons from your closets: What do you need to let go of to move forward in your business?

March 9th, 2011

Take a minute and think about what you have in your closets and what you have in your drawers. Are they are stuffed full of things you don’t wear, or think or hope one day you’ll fit back into, or things you think you might need, someday. If they are super jammed packed, then there is likely no room to add anything to it.

Now, we can look around and start to see the patterns of our thinking reflected in our belongings. Look at your bookshelves, your garage, your car, your office, your kitchen cupboards. What are they saying about your ability to let go and create space for something new to evolve? Now take a minute and look at other areas of your life. Your email inbox (eek), your calendar, your to-do lists, your community commitments, your schedule, your child’s schedule. What does that look like? Is that crammed filled with activity, stuff, commitments?

Now take a minute and turn that energy inward. Are there unresolved grievances, anger, sadness, that are lingering. Is there blame, shame, and fear, self-doubt cluttering up your inner landscape. Do you have swirling thoughts, and critical chatter of critics and ‘shoulds”? Is your inner world packed and overflowing?

We as healers and helpers know that the outer world is just a reflection of the inner, that our closets are a reflection of our inner being.

It is so easy to step on the speed treadmill of “doing” and stay endlessly distracted with busyness and neglect to tend to our closets, garage, email inbox, inner mind and soul. No need to become critical with this awareness, instead lean into the awareness as an opportunity to explore what’s really going on with your closets, yourself, and your business.

You may want to ask yourself these questions and use some art to explore your responses:

  1. Why all the busyness? What’s the purpose of it? Decide what’s a priority, and let go of what’s not.
  2. Decide what you REALLY want. I ask those I speak with to tell me about how their days and weeks would look if they were doing what they loved. Most have never taken the time to get very specific on what they want, and instead they react, stay busy answering emails and phone calls randomly, responding to what comes up, rather than making a firm commitment towards their vision. If you don’t have a vision of what you are creating, then that’s the initial area you need to clear up some space and time to explore. Use some art materials and listen to you inner voice for guidance.
  3. What do you need to let go of? In order to create the space in the closet for all the new goodies you are adding you’ve go to let go of those leather pants you swore you’d someday fit into again. In your life there are some commitments and obligations that can be delegated or ditched, and some commitments no longer fit. Internally, there are some beliefs that no longer fit, such as your need to do it all by yourself, your need to know how before you act, your belief it needs to be perfect, your need to have a pretty website and brochure before you start to see more clients. These are hanging out like bad gold lame, it’s time to let go.

So pick one thing that you will focus on for this whole week; just one thing that you will let go of what no longer serves you (it can be personally or in business). Allow yourself to feel the fullness of what it means to let go of that and what might be triggered in the process.

Now before your brain launches into a story about, “Now I need to get this done”, or “I don’t even know where to start” or “See, I’m not good enough” or “I don’t have the time”, lovingly drop the story.

Lovingly
Drop
The Story…

There, you have just let go of what no longer fits.

Letting go creates space for what’s new to grow. Are you ready to learn how to transform your vision of helping more people into a passionate powerful and profitable business you LOVE?

The Miracle Question for Your Business…

February 9th, 2011

I’m a huge raving fan of the miracle question. If you are familiar with solution-focused therapy, the you’ve likely used the miracle question. Here’s a common version of it:

“Suppose our meeting is over, you go home, do whatever you planned to do for the rest of the day. And then, some time in the evening, you get tired and go to sleep. And in the middle of the night, when you are fast asleep, a miracle happens and all the problems that brought you here today are solved just like that. But since the miracle happened overnight nobody is telling you that the miracle happened. When you wake up the next morning, how are you going to start discovering that the miracle happened? … What else are you going to notice? What else?”

As a true Creativity Queen I’ve been known to pull out a wand and have practice-building clients playfully embrace the role of playing “what if” in their business. It allows for some expansive ideas of what’s possible in the work you do, like creating a book you always desired, or offering a workshop or presentation of your creative ideas.

There are several stages that businesses go through as they grow and expand, and the miracle question allows you to explore what you desire to create. Let’s look at the different stages of business, so you can see what’s next for you (and perhaps see that the miracle is not that far from where you are).

Stage 1: You are in the set-up stage and you are either just about to launch your business, or you recently have launched. During this phase your miracle question likely will be about reaching new clients and welcoming them into your business. During this stage you are working on the basics for your business, such as setting up your space, making sure you have all the necessary legal paperwork as a business entity, and building referral resources. You may have created some business cards and brochures, and you’re looking at creating a website sometime soon.

Here’s what is essential during this stage: getting clear on who you help and how you help them, so you know where to best target your marketing efforts and begin creating referral connections. You’ll also be building systems at this time, so you have paperwork in place and a system on how you connect with clients when they call you. Your “miracle” likely involves having a full (or pretty full) client load and you are investing in getting clear on your client-centered message, and creating marketing systems for your business.

Stage 2: You’ve gotten clear on who you work with, created referral connections, and you’re starting to create a name for yourself in your community. During this stage you’ve created a client-attracting website and added speaking, community teaching, or community workshops. Since you are seeing more clients and your time is getting limited, you’re looking to leverage your time, hire an assistant, and perhaps add some groups to see more people.

Your “miracle” will likely involve (if you are a therapist), “how do I stop paying insurance companies and still maintain the number of clients I see”? Your solution is to create a managed care exit plan and to find very clear ways to communicate the value of your services and your expertise of the work you offer.  No matter what helping/healing work you are in, you’re investing in systems to make your business operations run smoothly and creating a “signature system” unique to the work you do, maximizing the effectiveness of your website, and maintaining and building community relationships and referral partnerships.

Stage 3: You’ve been seeing folks for a while and you’re tired of the ebbs and flows during certain parts of the year. You’re well established in your community and your clients are mostly private pay. Your business is pretty busy, with back-to-back clients, and you are likely running from dusk to dawn.

Your “miracle” will likely involve how to shift from trading dollars for hours and stop working so hard in your business. You may be feeling a bit isolated if you work alone, and you wonder how you can free up sometime and help more people without working harder. You’re investing significantly in shifting your business model, hiring additional staff and support, or leveraging your time by creating products to help your clients and new ways to service them, such as online programs.

Stage 4: You’ve decided to play bigger and want to move beyond just seeing folks in your community. You are exploring online opportunities to share your work, offer programs online/offline, or possibly train others in the model you developed. You are looking to share your message with the world and reach 10,000’s of people.

Your “miracle” will likely involve helping more people and connecting with people in a big way online and growing your list in a big way. At this point you are investing significantly in learning how to leverage your message and reach more people, which may include writing a book, or creating online and offline programs.

Want to get creative? Create a visual compass of what stage you are in and what direction you desire to head in. Use some luscious art materials or collage images and get super clear on your current place, then design an image that captures your “miracle” (Feel free to post an image of your artwork and ah-ha’s on the blog!)

Now all business are not quite that orderly, and you may find yourself with some actions in Stage 2 and Stage 4. However, there are some basic things that need to be in place, otherwise moving to a new stage may not be at all what you expect!

If you need some help with getting clear on where you are at (and what you need to do next) then you are going to want to JUMP for joy! Find Your Niche and Clients Will Find You!

April 21st, 2010

holeinroofDo you see that mess? Well that is my ceiling in the family room of our summerhouse up north. To make a very long story short, our water shut-off valve burst and this was what our neighbor discovered when he went into check on our house!

What a mess- our happy relaxing retreat was turned upside down as over 1000 gallons of water rushed through the bathroom upstairs and down through what was once our ceiling! It was heartbreaking to see the images, and even more heartbreaking to talk with our insurance company!

However, there is something important about this story that will benefit your therapy practice. Once you ‘get’ this you’ll understand exactly why you may not have the number of clients you’d like to see in your therapy practice!

So the heartbreaking news was our home was devastated by water, our hardwood floors damaged, our bathroom completely destroyed, and our ceiling defunct… but it was the discussion with our insurance company that was truly devastating!

Our insurance company adjustor came and made a determination that denied us a claim. Basically, the cost of this damage would need to be paid out-of-pocket. What we are learning in this process will help you in your business, and be the big ‘ah-ha’ that will help you to authentically attract more clients to your practice.

So when we found out our claim was denied by our insurance company, we did EXACTLY what people do when they have a problem. We started to look for a solution!

We did what most people do, and that is we asked people we knew if they had ever had this problem and what they did. We asked a family member in the real estate business if they had ever encountered this problem. We got the name of another insurance company who said they worked with an adjustor company who did exactly what we needed- they took on claims against insurance companies if they believed it was a wrongful determination. Then we spoke to another friend who had a contractor that was an expert in cleanup from water damage, and could help us with reconstruction. We were able to easily search for mold clean-up remediation services, because we knew they would be able to help us with all the water damage and sprouting mold!

Can you see what all of these have in common? They are all specialized experts who have created a very specific and targeted niche. So when we needed help and stared to ask around and do internet research, these experts stood out from the crowd and they were exactly what we were looking for.

The insurance company was able to refer us to the adjustor company because they knew that was their area of expertise (notice there was no competition). The contractor was the perfect fit because he knew exactly what we were dealing with and quickly offered us a solution to fit our needs (of course he was referred because his services matched our needs). The mold remediation specialists were easy to find online in one quick search because their services are so targeted (mind you because they are specialists they charge an EXTREME amount of money)!

So how can this hole in the ceiling mishap help you in your business?

When you niche your practice, you make it crystal clear who you serve and what you offer because you are ready to step in and help your clients with their very specific problems. When you don’t claim a niche you do a disservice to your clients (they won’t know where to find you), as well as your services (you’ll be SLOWLY building your practice and you’ll be poorly compensated for your time)!

So are you niche resistant, meaning you haven’t committed to a niche? Take this quick quiz and see how you score:

  • When people ask you who do you work with you say more than one targeted population
  • When you describe what you do you talk about how your work can help everyone
  • You describe numerous diagnoses you treat in your practice
  • You describe your modality of treatment as your niche
  • You are earning much less than you desire
  • You’ve been in practice for years and you still struggle to get clients

If you score all “Yes”- then it’s time to get an extreme niche makeover!

If you have a majority of “Yes”, you will want to learn how to create a niche that supports you and helps others refer to your practice.

If you do not have a “yes” then whoo hoo! Way to go, keep rocking!

You see there are people out there waiting for your unique brilliance to help them. When you deny stepping into your unique gifts, you deny those clients an opportunity to work with you.

If it weren’t for the all those professionals who found their niche and specialized in their expertise, we would still be looking for help for our house with little success. SO the lesson learned- niche and clients will find you!

Want my insider strategies on how to create a profitable niche aligned with the work you love to do? Join me for a complimentary call where I’ll reveal how to Niche and Fill Your Practice.

What's Your Bigger "Why"?

April 7th, 2010
I’ve been talking to many of the therapists on the strategy calls and exploring with them their big “why”, the reason why they do what they do. We are not in this profession for the money, but to help others process, grow, explore, heal, and transform their relationships and their lives. Money is not the bigger “why”, but the gift of helping others is what keeps us showing up, being present and compassionate with our clients. So when the clients aren’t showing up all of a sudden you may question your clinical skills, or start to second-guess your gifts as a therapist. Self-doubt will often show up when you are vulnerable and do its best to keep you put. Yet, you know your truth, you have the clinical knowledge, you are a gifted healer, that is your truth.
However, even the most gifted therapist may get overwhelmed and feel stuck, if they are fearful of not attracting enough clients to their practice.  (read more on the blog- click here). Fear often shows up at these crossroads with the intention to keep you right where you are. So people start to make comments about the economy or about things not working out because there is too much competition. Brilliant therapists may just stay put, doing more of the same marketing as they have done in the past, hoping things will be different. Some people may start looking for contract or agency work, fearful if they don’t do something now they may not be able to pay the bills.
So what can you do during these periods, when Monday comes around and you are dreading the lack of clients, or the agency job?  You can look fear head-on and see what it is attempting to do; then when you acknowledge fear, you can begin to take action on marketing your business.
I like to think of fear as an indicator that there is a possibility for something remarkable to happen fairly soon. Here’s a simple tool to help you understand what your fear is signaling.
Draw a bull’s eye with two rings. In the center of the target is your comfort zone. It’s the place that is familiar to you right now. Even if it is not the best place for you, it is familiar. Your comfort zone may stretch some, but it stays fairly closed. When you move beyond the comfort zone into the next ring you are in the ‘gap’. The outside ring is your goal, or intended outcome.
While you are in the gap there is an intensity of feelings, this is where fear resides. Emotionally you may feel like you will be annihilated. Being in the gap will bring up lots of negative cognitions to validate why you should go back in to your comfort zone. You’ll find excuses to quickly help you return to your comfort zone (such as I can’t do that, I don’t know enough, I don’t have the time, I don’t have the money, the economy is bad, my spouse won’t let me, etc). We see this with our clients when they go through transition as they move out of their comfort zone and familiar patterns into the unknown. By looking at fear honestly and openly you can see where you may be ‘playing small’ and staying in your comfort zone (even when you are longing for something bigger).
Take the time to do this exercise and write down or draw out all the negative cognitions and feelings in the gap. Then acknowledge what you desire to create, and take steps towards your bigger “why”, or the goal that keeps you showing up, even on tough Mondays.
Ready to take a no excuses approach to your bigger ‘why’? Then join us for the 6-month Create a Business I Love Platinum Program on April 9th. You will be given a blueprint to create a six-figure business and walked step-by-step through the process of exactly how to create the therapy business you love, making more money and helping more people.
